How to add Samsung Hanwha / Wisetnet cameras to Cam Hero using RTSP
How to add Samsung Hanwha / Wisetnet cameras to Cam Hero using RTSP

Samsung's SNH series IP cameras, also branded under Wisenet or SmartCam (not to be confused with Hanwha Vision), were once a popular choice for home security. However, these models have since been discontinued, and their outdated firmware can make modern-day streaming and integration hit-or-miss.

Still, if you're hoping to revive one of these legacy cameras with Cam Hero on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV, here's a guide to walk you through the process. While results may vary, many users have successfully connected using a bit of trial and error.

Before You Start

  • SNH cameras are no longer officially supported by Samsung, and their firmware may not comply with newer RTSP standards.

  • Trial and error is often required due to inconsistencies in firmware versions.

Step 1: Confirm Username and Password for Hanwha / Wisenet / Samsung

Your camera must be accessed using the same username and password you last set using the Samsung SmartCam mobile app or web interface.

If you never set a custom password, try the following default combinations:

  • Username: admin

  • Password (try these one by one):

    • 4321

    • smartcam

If none of these work, you may need to reset the camera and set a new password using the old Samsung software (which can be difficult to find).

Step 2: Discover the Camera's IP Address using Cam Hero

Open Cam Hero and wait a few seconds to see if the SNH camera appears in the local network discovery list. If it does, note the IP address displayed alongside the camera.

You can also use tools like Fing App or your router's web UI to identify the camera's IP.

Step 3: Try These RTSP URLs

Older Samsung SNH cameras used multiple RTSP profiles. Try these in order:

rtsp://[IP Address]/profile1/media.smp
rtsp://[IP Address]:[Port]/profile1/media.smp
rtsp://[username]:[password]@[IP Address]/profile1/media.smp
rtsp://[IP Address]:554/multicast/profile1/media.smp

Replace [username], [password], and [IP Address] with your actual values. Important Notes:

  1. As mentioned earlier, you can use the Cam Hero app to discover the [IP address] of you your SNH camera.

  2. Default value of [Port] is 554 unless you have changed it

  3. Samsung SNH camera typically support multiple streams / profiles, so try changing "profile1" in the URL above to other profiles like "profile 2" or "profile3", "profile4", "profile5"

Example:

Here is how a complete URL may look like once filled with all the information

rtsp://admin:4321@192.168.1.101:554/profile1/media.smp

Step 4: Add to Cam Hero

  1. Open Cam Hero

  2. Tap the "+" (Add Camera) button

  3. Select "Add Manually"

  4. Paste your RTSP URL into the field

  5. Tap "Test Connection"

If one profile fails, simply try the next. Often, only one of the profiles is active depending on your firmware version.

Common Issues

  • Black screen or connection failed? Try a different profile number

  • Wrong credentials? Try resetting the password using SmartCam software

  • Camera not showing up in discovery list? Double-check it's on the same network as your iPhone or Mac

Conclusion

Connecting a Samsung SNH SmartCam to Cam Hero can take a few attempts, but it's definitely possible in many cases. While these cameras aren’t officially supported anymore, Cam Hero’s manual RTSP mode gives you a chance to get more life out of your legacy gear.
